Seven straightforward steps from project planning to pour day
Before calling us, determine how much concrete you need. Measure the length, width, and thickness of your pour area and calculate the cubic yards required. Always add 5–10% for waste, spillage, and uneven sub-base. Use our free online calculator to get an accurate estimate in seconds. Ordering too little can leave you with cold joints; ordering too much costs you money.
Different projects require different concrete strengths. Common mixes include 3,000 PSI for sidewalks and driveways, 3,500–4,000 PSI for foundations and structural slabs, and 4,500+ PSI for heavy-duty commercial applications. We also offer air-entrained mixes for freeze-thaw environments, fiber-reinforced mixes, and custom designs to meet your project specs. Not sure which mix is right for you? Call your nearest Adams Brothers plant or submit a delivery request online. When ordering, have the following ready: your delivery address, desired pour date and time, cubic yards needed, mix design/PSI, slump preference, and any special instructions (fiber, color, etc.). We recommend ordering at least 24–48 hours in advance for standard residential pours, and 3–5 days ahead for large commercial jobs.
A well-prepared site ensures a quality pour. Make sure your forms are set and staked securely, the sub-base is compacted and graded, any required reinforcement (rebar or wire mesh) is in place, and the ground is slightly dampened but not saturated. Clear a path for the mixer truck — our trucks need at least 14 feet of clearance overhead and a firm, level surface to operate safely. Have your finishing crew and tools ready before the truck arrives.
The day before your scheduled pour, confirm your delivery window with our dispatch team. Let us know if site conditions have changed, if you need to adjust your order quantity, or if timing needs to shift. For large jobs requiring multiple trucks, we'll coordinate staggered load arrivals so each truck arrives as the previous load is placed. Our dispatchers track every truck in real time so we can give you accurate arrival windows.
When the truck arrives, our driver will review the delivery ticket with you — verify the mix design, PSI, and yardage before signing. The driver will position the truck and begin discharge. Work quickly and efficiently: ready-mix concrete has a limited working time (typically 60–90 minutes from batching). Have your finishing crew positioned throughout the pour area. Do not add excessive water to the load — this weakens the concrete and voids mix design guarantees.
Proper curing is critical to achieving the full design strength of your concrete. Keep the surface moist for at least 7 days using curing compound, wet burlap, or plastic sheeting. Protect fresh concrete from freezing temperatures (below 40°F) and extreme heat. Avoid loading the slab with heavy equipment or vehicles for at least 7 days, and wait a full 28 days before subjecting it to full design loads. Cutting control joints within 4–12 hours of placement helps prevent random cracking.
Residential pours: 24–48 hours. Commercial or large jobs: 3–5 business days. Peak season (April–October) may require more lead time.
